Everything online on abinnitio is free but we ask for donations to Haven, a registered charity which sends free books, especially dictionaries, to prisoners in the UK who are doing recognised courses such as NVQ, A levels etc.
Haven became a registered charity in 2001 but existed for five years before that, raising money by getting people to do bar work for the Workers Beer Company, another registered charity, at events like pop festivals. (The money the volunteers would have received went to the worthy cause of their choice, in this case Haven.) Today Haven operates on too big a scale to be financed by people working the early shift at all-night raves (and then spending the rest of the night dancing) but Haven doesn’t have any paid staff, only unpaid volunteers. So nearly all the money donated to Haven goes to buying and sending out books with the absolute minimum spent on overheads like rent for office space. See havendistribution.org.uk for more details. Haven’s patron is the poet Benjamin Zephaniah.
